Swimming Lesson FAQ’s
Yes! We have Teen/Adult group lessons on Tuesday/Thursdays and on Saturdays. We also have private lessons. If you are interested in private lessons, reach out to Jess Redberg, Aquatics Coordinator jredberg@whatcomymca.org.
Only standard swimsuits are allowed. Jean shorts, cut-offs, leotards or cotton shirts are not permitted.
If you or your child has water sensitivities, goggles, swim caps, earplugs/nose plugs can be brought in, but are not required.
Most lessons will be spent working without equipment, but we do provide kickboards, noodles, diving rings, etc. that may be used to assist the lesson.
For the best interest of the health of other members, staff and guests, please stay home if you or your child are sick. In order to maintain the integrity of our classes in regards to content and size, we do not offer make-ups for illness, recitals, vacations, etc. We have found that adding swimmers to classes for make-ups disrupts the rhythm, safety and integrity of the class. Please do your best to attend!
If your child is 11 and younger, you or a guardian 18+ needs to stay in the pool area at all times during the lesson. If your child is 12 and up, you are welcome to leave the area and come back at the end of the lesson. We have metal bleachers on the pool deck where you can observe, or if your child is in the small pool, you can choose to sit on the chairs provided in that room. Should you choose to sit in the small pool area, be prepared for a very warm and humid environment. Whichever option you choose, you may discover after a lesson or two, that it could be more beneficial for your child to change where you may be sitting. Some children do better knowing their parents are close at hand, while others do better knowing their parent isn’t sitting so close. If the instructor has a suggestion as to where they believe it would be best for you to sit after working with your swimmer, they will certainly discuss that with you.
