We are excited to share that the Whatcom Family YMCA will be receiving a much-needed roof replacement at our downtown Bellingham location (1256 N. State St.). Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 9 and will take approximately 3–4 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
What to Expect
During the project, there will be some short-term disruptions:
Crane activity on State Street: To move materials on and off the roof, a crane will be stationed near the Rock Wall side of the building. This will require a temporary closure of one traffic lane, parking spaces, and the sidewalk in front of the Rock Wall entrance. The first closure is scheduled for the morning of September 9 and is expected to last about 3 hours.
Noise inside the Y: Roof construction comes with some unavoidable noise. We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews work to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible.
Minor access changes: While most entrances and parking areas will remain available, please watch for posted signs and staff guidance during crane operations and debris removal.
Why This Matters
The Y is more than a gym, it’s a community space where thousands of people come together each year to connect, grow, and thrive. This investment in our facility helps ensure a safe, welcoming, and reliable home for all the programs and services our members count on.
Thank You for Your Patience
We know construction projects can bring temporary inconvenience, and we are grateful for your flexibility as we complete this important upgrade. Our goal is to minimize disruptions as much as possible while keeping members, staff, and the public safe.
Thank you for being part of the Y community — together, we’re building a stronger Y, for a better us.
