"Schools will be closed to keep children safe, we plan to re-open in 6-weeks." That is what we heard in March 2020, little did we know that 6-weeks would extend into 2021! What were parents to do? Parents were between a rock and a hard place with needing to work, yet their children needed care and instruction.

The YMCA worked quickly to provide care to families of emergency and essential workers. In partnership with the Bellingham School District, the YMCA provided care in the Spring of 2020.

But what about when fall rolled around and kids would potentially be home and online? Once again the YMCA provided families with care on the days that the kids were not in school but still provided assistance with the online learning environment.

"We’ve had an amazing experience with the YMCA childcare programs, for many years, but especially this year.

Throughout such a crazy time, the YMCA never missed a beat. The program directors and teachers continued to show up, day in and out. Everyone was constantly adapting to changes (sometimes rolling out daily). They kept in contact with us frequently and were always available for questions - there were a lot!

We were able to keep working throughout the pandemic because we still had childcare. I’m not sure what we would have done without it. And, our kids transitioned from T1 to T2, and from pre-K to kindergarten (thank you Y’s Kids!) pretty gracefully, all things considered.

When everything was so uncertain, it was always nice to know that we could count on the YMCA. And above all, I was always confident that they were doing their best to keep our kids safe. I really couldn’t ask for more."
