KidCents Grant Helps Expand Girls on the Run Throughout Whatcom County

Little “Cassie” would hang around the playground, watching the Girls on the Run team while they talked, ran and played in the grass field. Each practice she would creep a little closer until Coach Sam asked her if she would like to join GOTR. Cassie answered that her mom said they couldn’t afford it. Coach Sam and I put our heads together and we were able to contact Cassie’s mom to offer a scholarship to participate.

Cassie jumped right in and showed all of us how fast she could run! She spent the next several weeks learning lessons with her team about standing up for herself and others, stopping the chain of gossip, choosing friends who lift you up (rather than tear you down) and lots of other life lessons to put in her girl power “toolbox”.  All of this while building friendships, playing games and getting plenty of fresh air and exercise!

Our YMCA Girls on the Run Program just received a generous grant from Rite-Aid’s KidCents program that will help us to reach many more girls in Whatcom County that are just like Cassie. The $30,000 donation will help us reach our goal of establishing teams at every elementary school, no matter how rural. The donation will give us the ability offer scholarships so that all of our girls can build friendships and learn the important life lessons at Girls on the Run, regardless of their financial means.

Thank You Rite Aid KidCents

We appreciate the very generous grant from Rite Aid KidCents
