Power-Up for Better Balance and Walking
Urban Poling Power-Up at the Bellingham YMCA
Have you seen people walking around your neighborhood with poles and thought “what is that about”? If so, you aren’t the only one. Walking with poles has become progressively more popular and there is a good reason for it.
When used with proper technique poling has lots of benefits including improving your balance and walking speed. Correct poling can also help people who suffer from joint pain by off loading a percentage of your body weight from painful hips and knees while walking, thus allowing you to walk longer or more often. For people who use a cane or walker, switching over to using poles can help promote an upright posture. Finally, using the poles correctly increases the amount of muscles used and can turn your everyday walk around the block into a full body workout.
Did you know the Y offers a class called Urban Poling Power-Up? During this class you will use specially designed Activator 2 Urban Poling Poles for seated and standing exercises to strengthen your upper and lower body, improve your balance and posture and work on walking gait and speed.
