Black Lives Matter

We Believe in a Safe Community for ALL.

Everything we do at the YMCA is based on the ideal that everyone should have the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their race, income, education or status. Our work is focused on eliminating barriers to access, eliminating disparities in health, providing educational enrichment, supporting working families, and growing the next generation of changemakers.

As we have witnessed yet another example of injustice, it is past time to look clearly at the discrimination embedded in our country. We must live what we believe everyday:

We believe in equality.

We believe in justice for all.

We believe we must fight structural and institutional racism.

We believe we cannot remain silent about brutality or violence against the lives of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).

We stand with the BIPOC community in their fight for justice.

We believe in providing a safe place for all.

We believe we must take action daily to create a just and equal society.

As an institution founded on strengthening communities, the Y is already addressing some of the issues for which the nation is currently calling us all to meet. But now is the time for our Y to double our efforts, fill in the gaps, and address these disparities more fully.

People from every level of our organization will be involved in developing plans that will help our community become more inclusive and equitable. This cannot be shallow talk--we must make significant changes and take bold actions to move our organization, our community, and our country forward.

Our Y will listen more, seek to understand and educate ourselves more, and do more as a vocal and active leader in helping our community confront the injustices of institutional racism. Together, we will work diligently to create a greater space that represents and welcomes everyone. Only then can we heal the wounds of the past and hope for a brighter future.
