More than a gym
Y Adventure School
This program, designed for middle school participants, provides a unique educational outdoor learning experience for teens. The Whatcom Family YMCA has blended outdoor adventure programming with the special needs of at-risk middle school students. This program builds students’ self-esteem and ignites their enthusiasm for learning, thus reducing their drop-out potential both in school and in other areas of their lives.
Y Adventure School uses a curriculum that provides a challenging environment to encourage students to make good choices, take responsibility for their actions and acquire new skills. The program is run with Y staff members that have extensive outdoor and group experience as well as a designated teacher from the local school districts.
Y Adventure School collaborates with school districts, principals and counselors who hand pick the most qualified candidates. This invaluable program is funded heavily by the YMCA Annual Community Support Campaign. Without the generosity of our community we would not be able to serve the 350 middle school students each year.
From Mt. Baker to the Puget Sound, Y Adventure School has been an educational gift for at-risk middle school students throughout Whatcom County.
